Ancient Greek Technology
he Evagoras and Kathleen Lanitis Foundation presents a unique exhibition by Costas Kotsanas, titled “Ancient Greek Technology”. The exhibition, which has already traveled to numerous locations in Greece, features a rich collection of maquettes of Hellenic period inventions and gives its own answer to the deification of Da Vinci – since his own renaissance did not come until 10 centuries later.
Included in the exhibition are functioning models of mechanisms and innovations from Ancient Greek Technology. The exhibits, accompanied by explanatory signs as well as audio-visual material, are educational in nature, interactive, and comply with modern educational notions regarding Museum Education. Some examples of the exhibits are the hydraulic wheel of Perachora, the automatic temple door-opening mechanism following a sacrifice in its altar, the aeolosphere of Heronas, Penelope’s loom, the olive press, the catapult, Aenias’ hydraulic telegraph, ancient clocks, the automatic purificatory, etc.
The “Ancient Greek Technology” exhibition provides a connecting link between ancient civilization and art, beauty and philosophy, serving to open our eyes and broaden our horizons by bringing a civilization with a strong foundation in technology into today’s world, proving that the ancient Greeks not only had a knack for practical solutions in their every day lives, but also great deal of imagination!
