19th Paradise Jazz Festival
We would like to welcome you at the 19th ParadiseJazz Festival which is going to take place at our favored spot, the Paradise Place in Pomos, Paphos on Friday the 17th and Saturday 18th of August 2018.
This year we will have the privilege to host one of the most remarkable artists of the previous Paradise Jazz Festivals. After 12 years from his first appearance Gilad Atzmon is coming back to Pomos and together with a refreshing form of Koullouras Trio it will be the highlight of our 19th meeting. We also welcome for first time the Pavel Skornyakov and Leonid Nesterov Quartet, the Latin jazz band Macumba and the brilliant trumpeter from Greece Andreas Polyzogopoulos who will perform together with one of the most important new groups in Cyprus, the Trio Misteriozo.
This last group will be on the beginning of this year's program on Friday the 17th of August, time 9.30pm. The Trio Misteriozo is conceded by three of the most active members of Cyprus Jazz Musicians and of course of Paradise Jazz Festival history. Is Giorgos Koulas -drums, Andreas Rodosthenous –bass & Ermis Michael -guitar. Their music is influenced by contemporary music elements of blues, jazz and funk. They play a mixture of original compositions and original arrangements of recognizable songs of our era. They are approaching them through improvisation with emphasis on a strong thematic melody, while being faithful to the individuality of each song. This year will join them a great trumpeter from Greece, Andreas Polyzogopoulos, who has collaborate with a long list of well-known artists in Greece or abroad, on recordings or live performances. His colourful Mediterranean sound is a perfect match for Trio's “Dream Away” ambience.
The next band on Friday night time 11pm. crosses the ocean and floats into South American's groves. The music band "Macumba” is a collaboration of the Chilean bass player Rodrigo Caceres, with Elias Ioannou -trumpet, George Morfitis -keys and Rodos Panagiotou -drums and percussion. They will very much raise the tempo in rhythms of Afro Cuban and Brazilian music. The Celebration Time …
Following the earlier mentioned program, Cyprus Jazz Musicians will end the night in a Jam Session with a theme of "Salsa and Latin Grooves", leaving us with joy and excitement for the following day. They will welcome Alberto Méndez -vocals, to join them for first time on stage of Paradise Jazz Family in a very promising musical night.
On Saturday the 18th the night will start on 9.30pm. with a quartet that has been arranged for the purposes of the festival. Pavel Skornyakov –sax and Leonid Nesterov -piano who are often performing like duo, will join for the first time two young but talented representatives of Cyprus Jazz Musicians, Omiros Miltiadous -drums and Kyriakos Kesta -acoustic bass. They will perform mix of original and modern jazz music.
Pavel Skornyakov is a rising star on the international jazz scene. As a gifted composer and musician, he is a virtuoso of the alto sax, soprano sax, tenor sax, and flute. Through such commitment to his art, Pavel connects to audiences of all sizes and tastes and he promises a show you will never forget. Pianist Leonid Nesterov has moved to Limassol in 2010 and he plays with many talented musicians around Cyprus, sharing his passion for Jazz. He is also performing with various musicians from the Baltic States, Germany, United Kingdom, Russia and Israel.
We kept for last as highlight of 19th Paradise Jazz Festival an old friend of ours who took part on the 7th PJF, 12 years ago. Gilad Atzmon as a bandleader and reed player he has been amazing his listeners with his powerful personal style that combines great bebop artistry and Middle-Eastern roots in a sophisticated, sometimes ironical manner. With him on stage will be on the acoustic bass the superb Irinaeos Koullouras, on electric piano will be Andreas Panteli and on drums Stelios Xydias. Gilad Atzmon is on saxophone and clarinet. Because of Gilad's latest cd -"Tribute to John Coltrane" a sector of trucks that band will perform at Paradise Place will be dedicated to the great composer when others will have strong elements of our geographical area and others will question the boundaries of jazz musical scales and rhythms. It is a great show and it is not to be missed.
Our last presentation for this year's official program is a last minute addition to it and is Odysseas Toumazou -guitar. He will at first present three original compositions of his and at second he will open another great jam session organized from all Cyprus Jazz Musicians who will be around to celebrate our annual musical meeting.
