20 - Art Group 242

Over the last century the boundaries of artistic genres have come to be rather fluid. Divisions are now constantly shifting and often set aside, giving way to challenging new ideas. Hence it is not rare in the contemporary art scene to find works that require a whole new platform to be placed upon. A platform, which can accommodate a hybrid of disciplines such as design, architecture, fashion or fine arts. 242, under the umbrella of the group, are seeking to explore these boundaries. Deriving from different backgrounds, Costas Mantzalos a visual artist and Constantinos Kounnis an architect - both parts investigate their common experiences to invent a language in which to communicate, between them and with the viewer. It was the creative displacement of both parts that has led them to work as a group, while the work itself does not pretend to be a “conventional” artwork but rather it seeks a place in its own right.

2016 marks the 20th anniversary of 242. To celebrate, 242 are planning a ‘retrospective presentation’ of the work, which is going to be laid out in a timeline marking their artistic activity of the last 20 years. The TWOFOURTO art group through the printed documentation of their work (catalogues, fliers and postcards), seek from their immediate social sphere (artists, architects, designers, cultural producers and scholars) the ‘re-invention’ of the work and the ‘reproduction’ of a new art piece, which is going to be part of the timeline. Participating artists are, Carla Abrantes, Maria Anaxagora, Savvas Christodouides, Eleni Gircalli, Kika Ioannidou, Nicolas Lambouris, Panayiotis Michael, Marina Nicolaidou, Theo Papathomas, Vicky Pericleous, Constantinos Stephanou, Xenios Symeonides & Yiannis Toumazis, Hourig Torossian, Bart van de Winkel

In other words 242 are reversing the roles here and appoint fellow colleagues to provide the artistic production of their new exhibition, while they themselves will become the curators of the show which is entitled, ‘20’.

The opening of the exhibition will be held on the 21st of October 2016 at 7.00pm at S2F2, Irakleous 7A, 1016 Nicosia. The exhibition will be open until 25 November 2016.

During the opening there will also be the launch of the new monograph by the 242 art group which is in the form of a visual diary highlighting the 20-year activity of the group.
