6th International Children's Film Festival
Welcome to the sixth year of the International Children’s Film Festival of Cyprus. The The ICFFCY is a non-profit association and has been focusing on cinema and its role in the lives of children and young people. We are proud to be the only festival of its kind on the island that combines movies and education in a program for children, teachers and parents.
Our aim is to provide children and young people from all communities in Cyprus with the opportunity to view and discuss a wide variety of films, which are selected from the broad landscape of international cinema based on their educational merit. The films each year have been selected from a wide range of recent releases of films, as well as classics.
This year we would like to focus on the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, therefore several of the films have been selected with the basic needs of all children and young people in mind, as the rights identified in this document are reflected and enhanced in the work and beliefs of the members of the ICFFCY.
The organizers of this festival believe that students can develop interpersonal skills and problem solving capabilities through group interaction and artistic collaboration. They can understand and follow a creative process, relating the role of cinema to culture and history. They can analyze and assess the characteristics, merits and meanings of traditional and modern form of cinema expression. ICFFCY gives this opportunity to children and youth to attend workshops where they can apply the creative process to skills of design and technical production (afternoon workshops). With the support of teachers’ packs, teachers can lead them to a better understanding of cinema as an art and as an educational tool.
Following last years’ innovation, ICFFCY will host morning screenings for schools and afternoon bi-communal workshops in Nicosia for teachers and pupils. We will be involving them in the planning and making of films and giving them greater opportunities to contribute in a purposeful way to the work of the organization.
In Nicosia screenings will take place at the Pantheon Art Cinema beginning 14 November with the marathon and the Opening Ceremony. Morning screenings for schools will take place also at the Pantheon Art Cinema and afternoon screenings at the Magusa Kültür Dernegi beginning Monday 16 November.
This year we will be introducing a ‘different’ bi-communal weekend giving the children and youth opportunities to take part in a variety of fun activities. As usual this will be taking place at the Goethe Institute, the Fulbright Centre and the Ledra Palace.
