7th Annual Exhibition of Cacti and other Succulents

Cyprus : 7th Annual Exhibition of Cacti and other Succulents

The Cyprus Cactus and Succulent Society is organising its 7th Annual Exhibition of Cacti and other Succulents on Sunday, May 18th 2014. The Exhibition will take place at the Exhibition Hall in the caves of the Akropolis Park in Nicosia and will be open to the public from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm. The event will be inaugurated by the Environment Commissioner, Ms Ioanna Panayiotou at 12:00 noon.

Once again the Cyprus public will have the opportunity to admire rare cacti and other succulents, as well as plants suitable for growing in the Cyprus garden.

Photographic Exhibition & Competition
Last year the gardens of 10 of our members were “opened” to the public through a photographic exhibition. This year we are hoping to “open” the gardens of all members. Our members will compete with their best photographs of their gardens. The photo exhibition will give the visitor the opportunity to admire plants that are not in flower during the time of the show, as well as parts of gardens and balconies one would not have had the opportunity to visit. Other than enjoying the photo exhibition and getting ideas that could be implemented in one’s garden, the visitor can also vote for the best photograph.

Sales of Plants and Books
Nurseries from all over Cyprus will be represented again this year and rare plants will be imported from abroad, specifically for the Exhibition. Furthermore, there will be plant cuttings and a great variety of relevant books.

Plant Competition
Concurrently with the Exhibition, the CCSS Annual Plant Competition will take place. All plants taking part in the Competition will be showcased at the Exhibition Hall. The Judge this year will be Dr Andreas Laras of the Greek Cactus and Succulent Society experienced collector, world renowned for his research on the cacti of Mexico.

FREE 8-page leaflet ‘The Smart Garden’
The latest edition of the 8 page leaflet ‘The Smart Garden’ will be distributed to the public FREE of charge. The leaflet was published by the Society with the support of the Commissioner of the Environment. It contains information on how succulent plants can be used in the Cyprus garden. Many succulents apart from being collectible are also suitable for growing in the Cyprus garden. Other than having minimum water needs they are beautiful, have small requirements for fertilisers, spraying and are low-maintenance. There are thousands of species to choose from. Some are groundcovers, others are climbers, others are bushes and some eventually become small trees. Your garden does not have to be planted just with succulents. Succulents grow well next to other Mediterranean xerophytes such as lavender, rosemary, echium, gazania, lantana, bay tree, common myrtle, jasmine, honey suckle and many others. Some succulents are hardy and many grow well in coastal areas.
