AES Cyprium (Copper) Connects and Cures
Objects and Pictures with Copper by Angela B. Clement
Cyprus – the Island of Aphrodite – is also the island of copper. Mining the aes cyprium, the "Ore of the island of Cyprus", has a history dating back many, many centuries ago – and always has been fascinating the German artist Angela B. Clement. Together with her father, a mining engineer, she visited the glowing chalcanthite in the old gallery of Rammelsberges / Goslar – and her quest for the traces of copper also lead her to Skouriotissa/Cyprus and inspired her to pictures, sculptures and pieces of art.
The works which Angela B. Clement will present in her exhibition in Nicosia point to the healing effect of copper. The medical benefit of cuprous salt has been already used by Egyptian and then by Greek and Roman physicians. Galen, for example, on the occasion of his visit to Cyprus around 160 AD acquired large amounts oft he highly esteemed Cypric copper sulfate and copper mineral from the mines of Soli. The pigment produced from madder red, which Angela B. Clement utilizes, today rediscovered as a renewable raw material, has been cultivated in Cyprus close to coastal areas and was exported to German dyeing factories.
