Alexandros G. Michaelides
Gloria Gallery presents the new work of Alexandros G. Michaelides. The painting exhibition will open on Tuesday the 5th of April at 7.30 p.m.
Alexandros Michaelides was born in Oxford in 1983 and was raised in Cyprus. He studied Fine Art first at Camberwell College of Arts (2004-2005) and then at Middlesex University (2005-2008). He obtained his Master degree, with a specialization in oil painting, from Canterbury Christ Church University (2011-2012).
He currently resides in Nicosia, where he works as an artist and as an art teacher. He has participated in group exhibitions in Cyprus and the UK, and has held solo exhibitions in Cyprus.
The theme of this body of work is the differentiation of still life, i.e., a challenge to our understanding of everyday objects and their use. He has chosen to use pencil and pen on paper, while on canvas he work with oils; it is the choice of colours and medium that play the most important role in these new work.
Speaking about his new paintings the artist states: “I also use the technique of academic measurement, following Euan Uglow. I feel that with this technique I am able to create a composition in which an (often) insignificant object can become the centre, the focus of the piece. I have chosen colours that will effect a subtle contrast of warm and cold hues, while purple, yellow, blue and orange tones are used to highlight the objects.”
The exhibition opens on the 5th of April 2016 and will remain open until the 23rd of the same month.
