French Cinema Festival AlimenTerre
“If you want to change the world, start from your plate!” This is how Kerstin Wittig Fergeson, Head of the Global Education Unit of the NGO Future Worlds Center invites us to the interesting movie festival that will take place in Nicosia.
From the 17th to the 24th of October, the non-governmental organisation Future Worlds Center, with the support of the University of Nicosia, will organise for the first time in Cyprus the French cinema Festival ALIMENTERRE.
ALIMENTERRE aims to present and generate a debate on the international food system. The screenings will take place at 20:00 at Cine Studio - University of Nicosia (Engomi) and the admission is free.
A documentary on genetically modified organisms, “Transgenic Wars”, will open the Festival, together with the short documentary about solutions to the global production and consumption system “Responsible Consumption Groups.” Debate and cocktail to follow.
Debate participants: Ch. Theopemptou (Member of the Parliament), George Stylianou (Consumers Association), Representative from the Agricultural Research Institute (TBC). Facilitator: Onoufrios Socratous
The second evening of the festival will start with the short documentary “Feed the Greater Paris” which studies solutions for satisfying the needs of a continuously growing population. It will be followed by "BUGS", an astonishing movie about a road-trip around the world of two chefs and their study on insects for human consumption and their potential for the future needs of the world’s population.
For the third evening of the festival, we will screen “Land Grabbing” wich gives an inside look into the world of investors in the international agro-business and shows the consequences for families kicked off the land; a modern version of colonialism.
A documentary on the banana production system, “Hold Up on the Banana”, will close the Festival. The movie sheds light on the conditions of the banana supply chain, from the working conditions in the plantations to the marketing strategies in the supermarkets.
Debate and cocktail will follow the screening.
