Andreas Ladommatos
Gloria Gallery announces the opening of the painting exhibition by Andreas Ladommatos on Wednesday, November 21st 2012 at 19.30hrs.
Andreas Ladommatos was born in Nicosia – Cyprus, 1940, and showed his talent in painting and drawing when he was a child and during his schooling at the Pancyprian Gymnasium, secondary school, where he was taught painting and drawing by the famous Cypriot artist Telemachos Kanthos.
After he left school, he studied art at Camberwell School of Art in London during the years 1960 – 1964 under the guidance of renowned artists like Frank Auerbach, Peter Uglow, Robert Medley, Michael Podro, Anthony Fry, Michael Podoro.
After his studies the young artist returned to Cyprus and taught art and architectural drawing in secondary schools. The artist also taught art at the Pedagogical Academy, (Teachers Training College). He was also seconded to the Curriculum Development Service of the Ministry of Education and Culture where he wrote the textbook Art History and Aesthetic Appreciation of Works of Art. He was for a period of time Art Consultant in Institutions like the Cyprus TV, Commercial Banks etc, and was Secretary and Vice President of the Cyprus Chamber of Art,( Ε. ΚΑ. ΤΕ. ), member of the Art Committee of the Ministry of Education and Culture. He has lectured extensively on art history and aesthetics, and has made stage and costume designs for the Theatrical Organization of Cyprus (THOC), designed stamps and illustrated many books. In 1982 he was awarded the Prize for Illustration by the Ministry of Education and Culture.
As a young, active, artist Ladommatos played an important role in revitalizing art and creating the Modern Avant Guard movement during the first years of the newly established Republic of Cyprus in the ’60, showing his abstract hard edge paintings, constructed painting reliefs and electric kinetic pieces.
During his long carrier the artist has shown his work in numerous one man exhibitions. He also participated in group exhibitions of Cypriot Artists in Cyprus and many other countries and represented Cyprus in International shows like the Uruguay, the Sao Paolo Biennale, the Cairo and Alexandria Biennales, the New Delhi Triennale, the Crakow and Belgrade Print Biennale. Andreas Ladommatos is very well known for his celebrated series of works like: Hard Edge, Painted Reliefs, Kinetics, Windows, The Old City of Nicosia, Stones and Waters, Woman’s Moments, Erotics, Cocktails.
In the year 1994 the artist had a very important Retrospective exhibition in Nicosia covering 40 years of his artistic activity with works representing all stages of his development , starting from the secondary school years, until 1994. He also had a retrospective exhibition in 2008 in Nicosia, covering 45 years of work, along with the launching a monograph, in Greek, on his life and work and, another one in Athens, 2009,with the launching of a second monograph, in Greek and English.
Andreas Ladommatos’ art is found in important private and public collections in Cyprus, the Presidential Palace, most Ministers’ Offices, The State Gallery, Municipal Collections, the Collection of Makarios III Institution etc, and in State Collections in Russia, Germany and Egypt.
The University of Cyprus owns a comprehensive collection of his work, donated by the artist and his wife Mary. In appreciation for the donation, the University has established the “Andreas and Mary Ladommatos Annual Prize”, and listed them as Sponsors of the University.
His work is to be found also in private collections, mainly in numerous countries in Europe, the United States and Australia.
