Art-Genius-War-City, Urbanism and Military Architecture in Italy
The embassy of Italy in collaboration with the Leventis Municipal Museum is hosting an exhibition dedicated to the military architecture in Italy from the middle ages to renaissance and modern times.
The exhibition depicts the development of fortifications and military architecture in Italy. It includes maps and other materials such as publications models and drawings. It focuses on the role of the fortification in the social and daily life of a city and finally presents the role of the fortifications as historical monument in a modern city.
Nicosia’s Venetian walls designed by the Venetian engineer Julio Savorgnano are considered as the prototype of the Renaissance military fortifications. The exhibition explains and presents the development of the designs, the shape and size of Italian fortified cities and therefore is an interesting example and comparison regarding the Venetian Walls of Nicosia as well as other military fortifications all over the island of Cyprus.
The exhibition is also accompanied by audiovisual material and special workshops and educational programmes will be offered for children and adults.
The original exhibition was organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Italy. The Leventis Municipal Museum is collaborating with a number of institutions and private collection in Cyprus and Italy in order to host original maps and other material related to the exhibition.
