L' Arte, Sempre Libera
Honneger’s symphonic poem Pastoral d’ été perfectly describes the mood of a serene dawn on the Swiss Alps, where the composer wrote the piece in 1920. Cypriot composer Marios Christou’s Study for soloclarinet, presented in Cyprus premiere, combines the modality and rhythms of the Middle East, with the techniques of motivic development and sense of formal unity of the West, and with more modernist approaches. Lovreglio tastefully used the overture and several arias from Verdi’s opera La Traviata in his effervescent Fantasia for solo clarinet and strings, which abounds with exquisite melodic flourishes and cadenzas for the clarinet. Written in 1800, Beethoven’s First Symphony is an accomplished work, sparkling with genuine energy.
