Ave Verum Corpus
In 2017, Christians the world over (orthodox, catholics and protestants) celebrate Easter together, something which won’t happen again for another 17 years, in 2034! On the occasion then, the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra presents us with an analogous programme featuring topical melodies by both “eastern” and “western” composers. Evangelatos’ Byzantine Melody transports us directly to the ambience of the season, devoutly and ecclesiastically, while Shostakovich’s Sinfonia da camera arranged by Kostas Nikitas lends a different dimension to this particular time of year. Well-known, of course, is Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus, even in its orchestral arrangement, while the same melody, based however on Liszt’s transcription for piano, is used by Tchaikovsky in the third part of his Suite no. 4, the “Mozartiana”. Easter together then, irrespective of dogma or creed, with the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra!
