Bank of Cyprus Historical Archives: Role & Challenges
The Bank of Cyprus Historical Archives:role and challenges in contemporary society.
Archives constitute a significant source of information on a country’s political, economic and social development and can therefore act as a catalyst for the preservation of historical memory and cultural heritage. The Bank of Cyprus Historical Archives, the unique bank archive on the island, celebrates this year’s International Archives Day by organizing an event on 12 June 2018 on the role and value of keeping archives in our society.
The Bank of Cyprus Group, a vibrant business organization with a strong presence in the island’s modern and contemporary history, preserves today a wealth of information and evidence tracing the socio-economic life of cities and the countryside from 1899 to the present day. The archival collections of the Bank of Cyprus Historical Archives bring together important material about the first savings banks and banks in Nicosia, Ammochostos, Larnaka, Lemesos and Pafos from the late 19th c. to the early decades of Cyprus’ independence. They also gather information of interest to those engaging in Cyprus’ economic history, such as economic and social historians, business historians, typography and design historians, biographers and architects.
At the event, speakers will refer to the establishment of the Bank of Cyprus Historical Archives and to the services they offer to various department of the Bank as well as to researchers.
Speakers at the event:
Nikiforos Orfanos, member of the Historical Archives Committee; Dr Alexandros Apostolides, Economic Historian; and Dr Evangelia Mathopoulou, Historian, Associate Curator at the Bank of Cyprus Historical Archives. Dr Christodoulos Hadjichristodoulou, Curator at the Bank of Cyprus Historical Archives, will moderate the event.
