Canaletto and the Leventis Capricci
The Wednesday Lecture - Canaletto and the Leventis Capricci: Two Masterpieces and their context.
Charles Beddington, art historian and specialist in Venetian view painting of the eighteenth century (Canaletto, Bellotto, Marieschi and Guardi in particular) will be delivering a lecture at the A. G. Leventis Gallery on 4 November 2015, 19.30. He will be discussing the View of the Piazzetta, Venice, with the Campanile under Repair and its pendant A Capriccio with the Ponte Santa Trinità, Florence, by the Venetian view painter Giovanni Antonio Canal, better known as Canaletto.
These unique works, hidden from public view for nearly fifty years and now on display at the A. G. Leventis Gallery and will be placed in context by means of comparisons with other works by Canaletto of similar nature executed at other periods of his career.Charles Beddington has contributed articles and reviews to the prestigious art journal The Burlington Magazine, as well as to numerous exhibition catalogues.
He has curated a number of exhibitions. He is the author of the catalogue for the major exhibitions Canaletto in England: A Venetian Artist abroad 1746-1755 (Yale Centre for British Art, New Haven, and Dulwich Picture Gallery, 2006-7), and Venice: Canaletto and his Rivals (National Gallery of Art, London, and National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., 2010-11). He is a member of the Honorary Committee of the A. G. Leventis Gallery.
