Nicolas Panayi - Carthago delenda est
Describing in words what the photographic material of Nicholas Panayi conveys is a vain effort. The raw story the series “CARTHAGO DELENDA EST” describes does not belong to the kingdom The Word but to that of The Real.
The photographs were meticulously taken in 2008 from the cemetery of Afaneia village where the artist’s father comes from. The purpose of the exhibition at the Office is at first not to show the vandalizing of a particular grave but to deal with conveying the atmosphere of divided Cyprus.
Secondly, memories and feelings are evoked by Panayi’s use of the camera that in turn disfigure time and space through the “defaced” forms. It is an ironically charming statement of the tragic that also questions the morals of art.
