Chiaki Kamikawa - Collector's Room
The Japanese artist Chiaki Kamikawa will present her latest drawings and a new collection of sculptures in the exhibition entitled Collector’s Room at Chiaki Kamikawa Contemporary Art in Paphos. The exhibition will be open on 1st December and will run until 22 December.
Chiaki Kamikawa investigates the realm of reality and fantasy. For the past few years she has been working on the theme of religious art with drawings and sculpture. Kamikawa feels less burdened by a certain religion as she was born and raised in Japan where the religion is merged into the customs and is not predominantly authoritative. The existence of the large numbers of cult groups in Japan also influenced her to explore possibilities of new religion as a theme. Her main interests are the roles of religious art and the religion in our life, and the relationship between religious ideas and imagery or objects. She does not follow a certain religion in her art. Ιnstead she creates her own ideas, new symbols and meanings and ultimately, a new religious art.
Kamikawa’s works trigger different memories of our life. The audiences are left free to make any other associations despite what the artist might have intended. Like her attitude towards any religion, it does not bind audience with a single idea or philosophy. Kamikawa takes various imageries from diverse sources which are usually not associated with each other and they are put together in completely irrational combinations. She also makes references to the presentations and styles of existing religious art; the images and objects that people admire, treasure, and fear, and the art that they decorate their houses with.
It is natural to associate something we see with the other thing we know, or to think of the meaning when we see the narrative imagery and symbols. Kamikawa’s works leave us to wonder its symbolism and meanings behind. In fact, Kamikawa’s work is challenging us to free ourselves from certain thoughts and the tendency of attempting to find the meaning by not giving any answers.
