Christos was born in Kissonerga in 1944. He studied art at the Surikov Art Institute in Moscow (1970–1976). For the first two years he studied art in a workshop and over the following four years he specialised in monumental art.
In 1976 he was awarded a Master of Arts. He has presented his work in solo exhibitions in Moscow in 1972, at the “Ora” gallery in Athens in 1976, at the Municipal Spiritual Centre in Syros in 1977, at the “Zygos” gallery in Nicosia in 1979, at the “Kyklos” gallery in Paphos in 1980, 1981, 1983 and 1990, at the “Apokalipsi” gallery in Nicosia in 1994, at the “Kypriaki Gonia” gallery in Larnaca in 1997, at the “Melina Merkouri Hall” in Nicosia in 1998, at the “Gloria” gallery in Nicosia in 2011 and has presented works in group exhibitions in Thessaloniki, Budapest, Moscow, the Triennale in New Delhi in 1991, the Commonwealth Institute in London in 1991 and at the Biennale in Cairo in 1996.
Dr. Andri Michael, an Art Historian, says the following: “Christos Foukaras combines the theme of realism with a simplicity of form which is, in many areas, mainly referential to the landscape. In particular, where landscape is concerned, it is merely a shadow, almost abstract. Influenced not only by Courbet’s realism but also by Byzantine art, his approach is realism with emphasis on the psychological dimensions. Of particular interest is the chromatic surface, which represents the surroundings and the mixture of colour tones to give shadow and volume”.
Also, Christodoulos Kallinos, an art theorist, has this to say about the artist’s work: “The latest period of his painting and one of his best moments;, he strongly recalls the chromatic sensuality of a Cezanne or a Matisse, pushing the intensity of colour to its limits and revealing him as an excellent colourist artist in modern Cypriot painting. In a series of still lifes he explores the limits and possibilities of colour representation in painting. In this work, the artist softens the contours, leaving the colours to maintain a dialogue between themselves within the framework of composition. In the artist’s still life, the exceptional dynamism of colour eliminates any decorative element that a realistic type of writing would impose.”
