Churchill
‘Politics is the ability to foretell what is going to happen tomorrow, next week, next month and next year. And to have the ability afterwards to explain why it didn’t happen.’
Sir Winston Churchill
At a time of failing trust in politics and in the absence of political figures that can rise up to the challenges that lie ahead, “Fresh Target Theatre Ensemble” with the exclusive sponsoring of Wargaming.net, continues its collaboration with actor Pip Utton and presents his latest solo show ‘Churchill’.
It is 1955, Churchill is 80 years old and is preparing himself for his farewell dinner at 10, Downing Street. The following day he will resign as Prime Minister. He looks back over the triumphs and bitter disappointments of his public and personal life.
Pip Utton inhabits Winston Churchill reminiscing about his childhood, his first experiences with war evolving into the great world leader he became, rising magnificently in his country's and Europe’s hour of need. Winston Churchill is such an overpowering person with so many sides to his character, and Pip Utton rises up to the challenge of conveying the man himself. During the 1930s, Churchill was the highest paid writer in Europe. He won the Nobel Prize for literature. He was also was an artist, orator, politician and, of course, arguably the greatest statesman of his time. Utton conveys something of the man with humour and respect.
Utton gives the audience not only the great statesman and some of Churchill’s most famous speeches, but also moments of touching intimacy. Sharply scripted Churchill is a particularly impressive performance from an actor who puts his whole heart and soul into this role. The audience spends an hour watching a performance in which laughter and tears go hand in hand; an entertaining, moving and informative hour of drama.
Utton’s ‘Churchill’ reminds us of the true leadership skills required by a politician in difficult times and poses a series of questions that are as relevant in today’s politics as they were in Winston Churchill’s time.
Pip Utton is an acclaimed stage actor and has toured with his shows across the globe. This is the third time he is collaborating with “Fresh Target Theatre Ensemble” (Adolf 2010, A Slight Risk 2012).
The performance will take place at Pallas Theatre in Nicosia for one night only on Friday, 26 April, 2013.
