Clytemnestra or The Crime
With Jenny Gaitanopoulou
You know my story well. I killed this man with a knife, in the bathroom, with the help of my miserable lover.
Clytemnestra is still alive. Many years have passed from the day she murdered Agamemnon. She is now old and lonesome, living with the ghosts of the past – her deceased daughter Iphigenia and her own self, her younger self, the day of the killing.
She is now on trial for her crime. Facing the ‘jury’, the audience in the theatre, she will speak about the murder she committed and her motives, the murder she is trying to forget, for forty years now.
You came here expecting to witness the killing right before your eyes, to witness a shorter version of the deed, to spare only a couple of hours just to hear me cry.
In Aeschylus’s Agamemnon she is described as a cruel woman bearing a masculine heart, as a vicious lioness. Forty years later, what has changed?
Your Worships, there is only one man in this world, every other man for every woman is nothing more than a mistake or a sad substitute. And adultery is often nothing more than the desperate disguise of faith.
