Contemporary art exhibition

Cyprus : Contemporary art exhibition

The event marks the first public appearance of two Romanian young artists, Alexandru Cican and Vlad Lomnasan that will the lead viewers through the newest media techniques. The exhibition displays photographs, digital art and media design, as well as DVD cinema screenings.

The exhibition continues the project launched by the Romanian Embassy in 2008 under the heading “Dialogue”, meant to present Romanian artists living in Cyprus and Cypriot graduates of Romanian universities. The event is organized by the Embassy of Romania in Nicosia in cooperation with Nicosia Municipality.

Alex Cican was born in Romania and moved to Cyprus at the age of 5. He started photographing at the age of 15. At that time, there was an Internet hype, which he gracefully embraced it. He created online profiles and websites in which he shared his photographs with the world. This was crucial in his development and growth as a photographer. By the feedback received from online communities he learned how to take good photos. During this time, his photos were viewed over 600,000 times whilst his website receives over 15,000 unique visitors each month. Some of his photos were purchased as prints whilst others were licensed to international companies and institutions from the USA, the UK, France and more for commercial use. He graduated from Birmingham City University with a first class honors degree in Software Engineering in 2010. He works as a freelance web designer and developer. Vlad Lomnasan was born in Romania and his first contact with the visual domain started inside the Nicolae Tonitza Fine Art School. The fine art school discipline influenced him as a photographer in seeing volumes and colours in their true artistic value. He graduated the National University of Drama and Cinematography in Romania. His works in photography and cinematography brought him several prizes at the Romanian Film Festivals. The pictorials signed by Vlad Lomnasan transpose grotesque aestetics shown in a seductive chiaroscuro. They show corporal expressions and attitudes which find their inspiration deep within “expressionistic” and “pop art” images.

Official opening of the exhibition: Tuesday, 2nd of November, at 19.30, by H.E. Mr. Andreas Demetriou, Minister of Education and Culture and Mrs. Eleni Mavrou, Mayor of Nicosia.
