Dancing Peace
InterSpace / Dancing Peace: The use of movement and dance as a peace-tool in intergroup conflicts
Elisavet Panagiotou-Presentation
Tuesday, 5th of June 2018, 19:00, Dancehouse Lefkosia
Free entrance
We, people have the tendency to form groups and organize our lives based on the groups we belong to. However, groups interact with each other and sometimes those interactions can result to conflicts; take the example of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict or the Cyprus Conflict between Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots. In such intergroup conflicts, each group tends to cultivate and perpetuate violence and hatred for the other group thus making the conflict harder to resolve. There is a lot of research coming from the field of psychology that tries to explain why such conflicts arise, how they affect societies and individuals and how we can resolve them. This presentation aims to briefly introduce participants to this research and then focus on why and how movement and dance can be useful in resolving such conflicts and promoting peace. Having this presentation in a Cypriot context is an opportunity to have an open dialogue based on our experience with the Cyprus Conflict.
