Painting exhibition by Demetris Michlis
Opus 39 Gallery invites you to a painting exhibition by artist Demetris Michlis.
Opening on Monday, 2 October 2017 at 7.30p.m.
Duration: 2-14 October 2017
Demetris Michlis was born in Achna, Famagusta, 1954. He studied painting at St. Martin's School of Art in London (B.A., M.A), under well known painters, such as the Polish painter Joseph Herman. In 1986, together with Garth Frost, founded the shadow puppet theatre "To Pidichto Lemoni" (The Jumping Lemon).
His work exudes a primitive force, sincerity and a truth that we seldom meet during our days. His is sure about his brushstroke and the colors he uses are earthen. His work is invariably imbued with his own self, and this, is evident in every art piece, whether a landscape or a human figure. “Creativity is a personal function. I work on a daily basis without having to wait to be inspired. By working, I strive to expand the creative space of my character, which I believe exists in every individual. When this space is open, at that exact moment an art piece is born. Thus, the suppressed energy is liberated and my self-esteem becomes stronger.”
Michlis has held numerous solo exhibitions in Cyprus and Australia and has participated in group exhibitions in the United Kingdom, Greece and Switzerland. His works are included in the collections of the National Gallery of Cyprus and the Central Bank as well as in private collections in Cyprus, Greece, Australia, United Kingdom, USA, Romania, Switzerland and Germany. Michlis currently lives and works in Tochni.
