Intensive theatre workshop: Devising with Masks
In this workshop, the principles of “masked play” from the pedagogy of Lecoq/Copeau/Bing will be explored through movement study and improvisation. Several types of mask will be explored: neutral masks; expressive masks; commedia masks; “found” masks; and masked play using text. Each of these masks will be shown to require specific levels of physical engagement, physical articulation, physicalized motivation or “urgency”, timing and spatiality.
The workshop will occur over five days, with five hours of teaching per day and two hours of unsupervised devising creation according to daily assignments. The teaching will address both movement technique and analysis, as well as improvisational play and analysis. The devised creation will involve students working in small, self-led groups, and will give them an experience of ensemble creation, by which actors create their own theatrical material.
The materials of the workshop will be provided to the students, or found during the course of the workshop in the case of the “found” masks. The neutral and expressive masks of Donato Sartori will be made available to the students, as well as some of types of the Commedia dell’Arte. Students will be asked to do some textual research and bring in texts in their native language. The workshop is suitable to beginning actors as well as actors with experience and training.
The workshop will be taught in English. Participants can and are encouraged to work in their mother tongues during the exercises.
