dissonArt Ensemble

Cyprus : dissonArt Ensemble

The Pharos Arts Foundation is proud to welcome, for the first time in Cyprus, the dissonArt Ensemble. Founded in 2005, in Thessaloniki, DissonArt has gained worldwide reputation as one of the leading contemporary music ensembles, while its members are all dedicated to the promotion of established as well as emerging composers. The concert, which is supported by the Embassy of Greece, will take place on Tuesday 29 November 2011, at The Shoe Factory, Nicosia / 8.30, and will include works by Beat Furrer, Tristan Murail, Dimitri Papageorgiou, and Cypriot composers Evis Sammoutis and Vassos Nicolaou.

dissonART ensemble:
Iannis Anissegos / flute
Alexandros Stavridis / clarinet
Nikos Kiriosoglou / piano
Theodoros Patsalidis / violin
Vassilis Saitis / cello
Under the direction of: Vladimiros Symeonidis

Based in Thessaloniki, the dissonArt ensemble was founded in the beginning of 2005 with the intention to disseminate the stylistic diversity of new music in Greece as well as internationally. Following the model of similar contemporary orchestral groups, the ensemble is organized around a core of eight soloists and associated partners, with a flexible internal structure.

Its programmes aim to promote works of recognized as well as emerging composers. Although its repertoire comprises all aspects of the music of the 20th and 21st centuries, it also entails a special focus on Greek composers. Collaborations with groups of other artistic disciplines (dance, video-art, etc) that result in the creation of original works are among the main objectives of the dissonArt ensemble, as are pedagogical projects.

To the latter end, the dissonArt Ensemble has developed an outstanding educational activity, regularly performing student works as part of the Composition Workshops organized by the Thessaloniki Music Megaron, and organizing seminars for professional performers who want to gain insight into modern performance practices. Since 2009, it has been collaborating with the Composition Workshop of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The Ensemble is in an ongoing search for listeners who understand music as an adventurous quest and not as a passive emotional response.

The dissonArt ensemble has appeared throughout the world, in notable festivals such as Klangspuren (Innsbruck, 2007), Milano incontra la Grecia (Milan, 2009), 4020.mehr als Musik (Linz, 2008), Athens Festival (2007), and in venues including WDR in Cologne, Thessaloniki Megaron, Brucknerhaus, 'noritensaal (Graz), Piccolo Teatro. The Ensemble has collaborated with renowned composers such as, Beat Furrer, Georges Aperghis and ''ustino di Scipio. The dissonArt Ensemble was recently invited by the Austrian Composers Union, die Andere Saite, to participate in a concert dedicated to the Union's twentieth anniversary. dissonArt is 'ensemble in residence' at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall for year 2011.
