Drawn on a Map with Gaps
The Visual Artist Christina Georgiou is presenting a once only alternative, conceptual Live Performance with the title: "Drawn on a Map with Gaps" at ARTos Foundation.
Performance art is a term usually reserved to refer to a kind of usually avant-garde or conceptual art which grew out of the Visual Arts. In contrast to the traditional performing arts, performance art is unconventional. Performance artists often challenge the audience to think in new and alternative ways about theater and performing, break conventions of traditional performing arts, and break down conservative ideas about "what art is”.
Drawn on a Map with Gaps integrates a sequence of short Performances: "Authority: Curse or Blessing?" and "Krunk".
This common title is referring to the recent work of Christina Georgiou which deals with the human behavior according to ones nationality and cultural background. Through her work she raises social, political, national and linguistic issues according to the different communicational styles. Moreover she examines the construction of social and cultural identity which depends on these aspects. She also observes the civil standards in the society and the communal response or reaction according to the rules of the society. She uses her performances as a proposal of the concerns she detect, expressing her opinion through her art-work. Christina refers to these facts with her own, special way, presenting them by the absence of her speech but with her body actions and the sound of her voice in an abstract way through the conceptual and minimal characteristics of Contemporary Art. Her aim is not to entertain but to alarm and invite the audience to examine and revise terms and rules and parallel with this she endeavor to bring the viewer closer to her concern through the fragility of her body as she provoke and motivate the viewer to participate in the work in an unconditional way.
Authority: Curse or Blessing?
This work refers to historical and timely facts concerning a diversity of social aspects including the Cyprus problem. Through these issues, Christina ‘examines’ her national, social and personal identity through the idea of globalization and racism and parallel with this she presents the figure and the power of the politician or the person who is in authority.
Krunk
A work inspired from the traditional Armenian song "Krunk". Throughout this work there is a parallel presentation of Cypriot and Armenian cultural identity through there differentiation but also their similarity according to the hidden tragic incidents that come to the surface through remembrance and memory of the Homeland.
Christina who will present her work only once, states: "I experience some situations for the first time in front of the audience as I don’t rehearse the work and this in my opinion makes the idea of the ‘Live’ situation stronger by letting the chance of inconsistency to occur. This moment lives only once, if it is repeated then the body imitates its own action and then the movement and reaction of the body becomes defined and predictable".
