Dreaming by Numbers

The Italian Embassy in Nicosia and the Società Dante Alighieri – Cyprus Committee, in collaboration with Artos Foundation, on the occasion the celebration of the 10th Week of Italian Language throughout the world (X SETTIMANA DELLA LINGUA ITALIANA NEL MONDO), organizes the screening of the film DREAMING BY NUMBERS on October 27th, 2010 at 21.00.

Neapolitans superstitious belief in numbers and their power to influence the future can be seen as an attempt to take destiny into their own hands. In Naples is a city with many crowded pour neighborhoods . Tucked into these areas are ricevitorie, small gambling offices where people go daily to play the lottery. Visitors do not pick their lotto numbers randomly, instead their numbers have personal associations with happy or tragic events they experienced; for them there is a direct link between the chosen numbers and their attempt to change destiny. In this reality, daily events seem to take on a whole new meaning. In Dreaming By Numbers, some regular visitors to a local gambling office, tell their personal stories in wich faith is interwoven into the rest of their lives. It is an intimate portrayal of the small office run by two sisters, Maria and Angela, combined with vivid street scenes. The result is a balance between realism and magic. The people portrayed in this film keep hunting for luck, whatever their past or their present can be. They all believe in numbers, and in their power to make their life change.
