Cyprus : DSCH - Tribute to Dmitri Shostakovich

The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra presents “DSCH”, a series of concerts dedicated to Dmitri Shostakovich and his works. The orchestra will play Shostakovich’s Ballet Suite no. 1, Piano Concerto No. 2 in F Major and the Symphony no. 1 in F Minor. Soloist on the piano will be Mrs. Vicky Stylianou and the concert will be conducted by Mr. Alkis Baltas.

Two concerts will take place on Wednesday 20th of March at Strovolos Municipal Theatre, Nicosia and on Thursday 21st of March at Markideion Theatre, Paphos. Tickets will be available at Strovolos Municipal Theatre (Tel. 22 313010) from the 15th of March onwards and at Markideion Theatre Paphos (Tel. 26 932571) 2 hours prior to the concert, for €12 and €7 (young people 18-26 years old and pensioners). The title DSCH is not irrelevant, as these initials are connected with the motif of the notes D (d), S (Eflat), C (c), H (b) which is used in many of the composer’s works. In addition, these initials compose the composer’s name Dmitri SCHostakovich.

The soloist
She was born in Athens and took the first piano lessons at the age of five. When she was ten years old she was awarded the first prize of the Panhellenic Piano Competition “K. Papaioannou”. She studied at the “Athens Conservatory” and graduated with honors. With a scholarship from the French government she studied in Paris (Ecole Normale). She also studied at the Music Academy of Basel, receiving the soloist diploma. She has given many recitals and chamber music concerts in Greece, England, France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Holland, Sweden, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Albania, Turkey, Romania, Poland, Cyprus, U.S.A., etc. She has appeared as soloist with many orchestras in Greece and abroad. She has recorded for Radio and Television, and she often participates in Greek and international festivals. Her repertoire includes a great number of works. She is especially engaged in the performance of Contemporary Music, and has given many Greek and world premieres. She has released CDs, including works written by contemporary Greek composers. She often collaborates with, the Athens Concert Hall (Megaron), the Greek National Opera, and many other cultural organizations. She is member of the “Greek Ensemble of Contemporary Music”, the “Athens Trio” and the “Orchestra of Colors”. She has studied advanced theory (fugue diploma). Several orchestras and Chamber Music ensembles have performed her arrangements. She is a piano professor at the “Hellenic Conservatory”.
