Dysfunctionalities in Contemporary art
Symposium / artist’s residency exploring notions and issues relating to dysfunctionalities in Contemporary Art impacting contemporary practices;
The influence of the art market on the creative process, its shaping of our perceptions of art, the role of mass culture, education and the influence of politics and disparate ideologies on artistic trends; Conditions that raise questions and foster philosophical dialogues aiming toward useful redefinitions of values in art.
Artistic evolution, escapism and exit strategies are some of the issues to be discussed at the symposium
The symposium will take place in two parts; The first will be hosted by The Mitos Centre of Performing Arts’ “The Yard Residency” program from 4th-10th July.
Both parts are sponsored by the Cultural Services department of the Ministry of Education and Culture.
In this first part of the symposium, participants will attempt to explore the above aspects in the context of Cypriot reality; Through discussions/conferences and residency practices, artists will address their issues and concerns, relating them to visual arts as well as to wide ranging distorting influences on art in our country; a non-existent dedicated Ministry for Culture, art education, the Cypriot Art market and the intellectual rights the of the artist.
Importantly, the symposium seeks offer an opportunity for vital exchange and dialogue between the participants. and the public. All events will take place at The Old Vinegar Factory, Limassol.
