Eastern Mediterranean Energy Cooperation
The Embassy of Hungary in Cyprus, in cooperation with the Embassies of Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia, and with the support of the University of Cyprus, cordially invites you to the “Forum on Visegrad Group-Eastern Mediterranean Energy Cooperation”, organised under the Hungarian Presidency of the Visegrad Group. The event will take place on 7th of May 2014 at the University of Cyprus, Lecture Hall 010, Social Facilities Centre, Building 7, University Campus, University Avenue 1, 2109 Aglantzia.
In the 21st century, new discoveries of natural gas in the Eastern Mediterranean can transform the region to an export oriented energy hub; however, several challenges remain to be faced. One is the cost-efficient, sustainable export of the resources to the European and global markets.
The Visegrad countries (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia) might seem unusual partners in this area. The first panel of the forum attempts to provide an answer: the previously isolated markets in Central Europe are being transformed to an integrated energy market as interconnections are being established among the Visegrad countries. The region now offers a market that represents 65 million consumers or 42 billion cubic meters of annual gas consumption, becoming a viable option by guaranteeing the economy of scale that suppliers need. The goal of the panel is to introduce progress made in the Visegrad countries’ energy market integration and discuss the gas export potential of Cyprus to the integrating Visegrad market via the existing and planned routes.
The second panel aims to discover the potentials and future prospects of the Eastern Mediterranean region focusing on the geostrategic, economic and political implications of hydrocarbons discoveries and developments. Presentations will provide an overview of the current state of play concerning exploration and infrastructural questions in the region.
