Electra and Orestes, the Trial
The play “Electra and Orestes, the Trial” is a new work based on Libation Bearers and Eumenides of Aeschylus, the Electra of Sophocles and Electra and Orestes by Euripides. The adaptation is made by the Israeli director of the play Hanan Snir, who combined extensive excerpts from the ancient tragedies mentioned above.
The play is based on the technique of "play within a play". The outer play is part of the trial at the Supreme Court, where Orestes is on trial for the crime of matricide. In this context, the events that led to the murderous act are presented. The scene of the events is a refugee camp, where the exiled Electra lives.
The director is interested to give answers not to what happened, but how did this family crime happened and what were the consequences of that act in the Athenian society of the 5th century BC.
The chain of retaliations and revenge which haunts the house of Atreides and inherited from generation to generation will cease only in the final trial in the court of the goddess Athena.
