Elizabeth Hoak-Doering - Archive
In this gallery, with its charged location, I present drawings in a straightforward way, to appear in their primary form: fragile, flat, translucent, surfaced, having edges, unprotected. There is a stark contrast between their materiality and the exhibition space.
Drawings issue from activity, with different drawings intimating different activities. In one series here, I went to places in Cyprus and analyzed stone piles in order to find their silhouettes (perceptual analysis). In other drawings suspended objects make lines (organized chance). In some recent ones, straining between two extremes of culture, old hip-hop songs play in my head as I look at Cypriot graffiti and make drawings about sound.
The drawings here come from exhibitions in London, New York, Venice, Nicosia and elsewhere. Underlying all of them is the fact that they have been kept. A drawing is flat and its secrets and stories are easily stored. This exhibition reflects on the virtues of keeping and revealing; and the current fashion for archival exploration, reinterpretation, and re-incorporation.
