EMBODY - group show
EMBODY is the title under which the artists Marina Zervou, Andreas Nicolaou, Nicolas Antoniou, Zenon Jepras, Savas Georgiades, Kalli Kastori, Nikos Frantzolas, Demetris Neokleous and Lazaros Menelaou resent their work.
Opening night on Wednesday the 28th of October, 8:00 pm
Episodes which through the body and beyond it create atmospheres were the visible implies invisible processes.
By drawing the human figure Marina Zervou attempts to approach and comprehend what lies beyond what we see (or what we might think we see), what lies beyond appearance.
Her work is figurative, not realistic. She uses reality but manipulates it. Her intention is not to produce a realistic imitation of the human figure but to pictorially reinvent the human body, find her own figure, the mirror of her comprehensive reality.
Andreas Nicolaou manages to always orchestrate the co-existence of many, supplemental compositions in any one work; a characteristic that expands the horizons of every composition of his by endowing it with a dynamic pulse. Cultivated through his approach, the reclining form of the girl also becomes organically, not simply thematically, the epicenter of the composition and at the same time the departure point of enigmatic states and surprises
Nikolas Antoniou’s work does not stem from a specific idea or theme. He consciously avoids focusing on specific questions or particular answers but instead, creates new pictures which generate unknown questions. Thus without great thought, paints vague spaces, objects which appear to be misplaced, both through time and dimension, next to items disjoint, with figures lost in an intense painterly environment, but in the end coexist and interact, giving meaning to their existence, tell a story and express a sentiment.
Zenon Jepras is a storyteller who has come to dig into our past, to record our recollections and reconstruct them in order to offer us a form of archaeology of memory. Each work holds clues to deeper personal and social narratives, like skeletons hidden in the closet. His characters often take the form of animals for satirical effect; thus creating an "alternative world'' which serves to undermine socially dominant forces.
Savvas Georgiades proposes us a true archetypical place full of personal codes and riddles, invoking the subconscious and fabricating the “how”, extracting the stories that the models are hesitating to narrate, doubting what seems and depicting with consistency what is; the things that he perceives and not the things he sees.
The key issue that concerns Kalli Kastori's work is alienation, in its multiple meanings: alienation from the self, from the others, from the environment. The randomness of coexistence and the eclipse of communication, as well as the effort to (re)create a self through the imitation of others, are key pillars of her work.
Life remains the source of inspiration for Nikos Frantzolas, adjusted and balanced with time and space, design and colour, motion and pose.
Revolving aroung the tension of a personal historical moment, the works of Demetris Neokleous look like depictions of a childhood dream.
The show will remain open until the 5th of December 2015.
Opening hours: 10.00 - 13.00, 16.00 – 20.00
