Espace Blanc

TWOFOURTWO present an installation, which consists of sculptural architectural volumes laid out on a central platform and wall mounted light boxes, converting the gallery space into a virtual urban white space; ‘Espace Blanc’. This is a complete shift from their familiar visual vocabulary of past works, where the use of the body is now replaced by the use of space and the photography has been taken over by self-standing volumes. No matter how this visual vocabulary has changed, TWOFOURTWO still continue their autobiographical search of their own world investigating their interpersonal relationships, which derived from personal identity and expands to social behaviour. In this manner, the installation here consists of architectural drawings and constructions taken directly by the TWOFOURTWO working and social environment.

Like in the past, TWOFOURTWO, have been using a very personal characteristic in the making of their artwork. The process has again been the main player in their art production and the base for all the works in the installation is photography translated into sculptural volumes and laser engraved light boxes. Once again, they are presenting industrially finished pieces made of stark materials such as plastic, metal and light. These works at first glance may lack physical and hand-made interference but at the same time they are charged with great mental as well as emotional values.

The exhibition ‘Espace Blanc’ by the TWOFOURTWO art group (Costas Mantzalos and Constantinos Kounnis) takes place at Argo Gallery from the 21st of September until 8th of October 2011. During the exhibition a new monograph will be available, entitled “15 ANS TWOFOURTWO”, illustrating the 15-year artistic history of the group.

"The TWO|FOUR|TWO art group embarked on a voyage of collaboration under the umbrella of the group. Deriving from different backgrounds; a visual artist and an architect - both parts explore their common experience to produce a visual base on which they can communicate, between themselves and with the viewers. The TWO|FOUR|TWO art group was formed on 21 August 1996 in Nicosia, Cyprus by Costas Mantzalos and Constantinos Kounnis. Since 1996 the TWO|FOUR|TWO art group has exhibited in Athens, Amsterdam, Dortmund, Erlangen, Melbourne, Nicosia, and participated in various exhibitions and events in Athens, Berlin, Frankfurt, Naples, New Delhi, Paris and Thessaloniki.
