In this powerful play, following Ted Hughes’ magnificent poetic translation, we are confronted with questions concerning the presentation of gods in a postmodern world. Supernatural powers, the Furies, chase Orestes who killed his mother. He takes refuge to the temple of goddess Athena who founds the first court of justice. Orestes is pronounced not guilty for the murder of his mother Clytaemnestra who had murdered his father Agamemnon. The vindictive Furies are transformed into blessed favourable Eumenides. The diachronic danger of enflamed violence is real and awe – inspiring in today’s world. Athena’s warnings are particularly relevant, as if uttered today: “Do not madden our young men, with the hiss of the whetstone, and the dream of the plunging blade…”
