European Year of Volunteering
The European Year of Volunteering is both a celebration and a challenge. It is a celebration of the commitment of millions of people in Europe who work in their communities during their free time without being paid – for example in schools, hospitals, and sports clubs, protecting the environment, providing social services and helping people in other countries. Their efforts and those of the many thousands of volunteering organisations make a huge difference to our lives in countless ways. The world would be much worse off without volunteers! The EYV is also a challenge to the three-quarters of the European population who do not do any volunteering. We would like to say to them that they can also make a difference.
The European Social Fund Unit of the Ministry of Labour and Social Insuranceorganises the next stop of the EYV 2011 Tour in the capital of Cyprus. The organisers will cover the main theme of the year 2011, “volunteering”, during the three days of the event to take place at the State Fair Authority building in Nicosia.
The three-day fun, dynamic and interactive event will count with the presence of Ms Elsie Christofia, the First Lady of the Republic of Cyprus, who will open the Nicosia Tour Stop at 10:00 am on 4 April 2011.
Volunteer organisations will present their experience and activities in areas such as sports, youth, drug prevention, road safety, senior citizen’s assistance.
Numberless municipalities will show examples on how to help the others and what a great experience exchange is. There will be dance performers of all ages and theatre plays from small communities. Visitors will have a chance to get a first aid course on the spot or learn to express basic things by sign language.
The closing ceremony will be an important act carried out by Mr Dimitris Christofias, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, who, in the presence of Mr Jan Truszczyński, Director General of the Directorate General for Education and Culture of the European Commission, will thank to more than 200 organisations for their dedication, enthusiasm and involvement.
