George Mavroudis, professional safari guide, photographer and naturalist is a third generation Tanzanian, born in Dar Es Salaam. Educated in Tanzania, the United Kingdom and Cyprus, his enthusiasm for “the bush” was evident at an early age. His earliest and fondest memories are of family trips into the wildernesses of Tanzania, be it a remote corner of Serengeti National Park, or the idyllic islands and marine reserves of coastal Tanzania.

After completing his secondary & military education in Cyprus, George spent time in Zimbabwe, working in conservation based positions, gaining further exposure to the bush and as well, the wildlife & environmental issues faced by sub-Saharan Africa.

George returned to East Africa and began his guiding career with Abercrombie & Kent, as well as Ker & Downey Tanzania, establishing his name in the industry. In 1992, he went on to start George Mavroudis Safaris. His steadfast belief that the quality of guiding is the single most important factor in the guest experience has led to his success as a top safari operator in East Africa and for this, George was recognized in Travel & Leisure’s 2008 annual publication as offering one of the “100 Greatest Trips of 2008”. He has also had the pleasure of facilitating and participating in several films and documentaries, notably the I-Max production “Africa, The Serengeti” and “Rivers of Life”. He has been fortunate in his career to have worked in conjunction with some of his personal heroes in conservation, namely Jane Goodall and Tony Fitzjohn, among others.

George’s passion for photography developed early in life. While most of his photographs highlight his appreciation for the biodiversity of East Africa, his close relationship to the people and tribes of the area are also evident in his work. Throughout his career, George has enjoyed capturing the beauty, traditions and cultural intricacies inherent to the area through film. His favorite subjects, are the Wahadzabe hunter-gatherers of Northern Tanzania, the Samburu of Northern Kenya and the various Ethiopian groups, in their traditional and often religious regalia.

When George is not on safari, he enjoys spending time with his three children, whom are all currently pursuing their education and careers in the United States. He is an avid reader and antique book collector and most enjoys the works of Robert Ruark and Lawrence Durrell. When possible, he also enjoys horseback riding and spending holidays with family in Cyprus. In 1995, George became the Consul to Cyprus in Tanzania and he still enjoys this important role within the Cypriot community.
