A Journey in time: George Seferis, Poet and Citizen

Update: The open air screening of the documentary “Seferis in the country of the eclipse” directed by Andreas Pantzis, which was scheduled to take place on 22 September 2011 with the opening of the series of events entitled “A journey in time: George Seferis, Poet and Citizen”, was, unfortunately, not completed successfully due to weather conditions. As a result of high demand, the screening will take place on Monday, 3 October 2011 at 20:30 at the ARTos Foundation, marking the end of the exhibition and concluding this series of events.

To mark the 40 years since George Seferis’ death, the ARTos Foundation in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Greece and the Embassy of Greece in Cyprus are organizing a series of events entitled “A Journey in time: George Seferis, Poet and Citizen”.

The series begins on Thursday 22nd of September at 19:30 at the ARTos Foundation with the opening of the multimedia exhibition entitled “George Seferis: Poet and Citizen”. The exhibition presents the life, work and course of the Nobel laureate poet (with photography material and video-installations) from the day of his birth until his death. As the great poet not only lived in Cyprus, but Cyprus itself was a source of inspiration for some of his greatest poems, it is of great importance that this exhibition is shown in Cyprus.

The exhibition has already been presented at the Frankfurt Library, in Smyrna within the framework of the international conference on George Seferis, at the Greek Cultural Center in Beijing in the framework of the activities for the Olympic Games in 2008 in China, in Athens and many other cities in Greece, as well as Constantinople.

The exhibition will be inaugurated by the Ambassador of Greece in Cyprus, Mr Vasilis Papaioannou. The exhibition will be introduced by Mr Athanasios Marantos, Head of Arts and Cultural Activities of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Greece and Mr Pavlos Paraskevas, director of the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education and Culture in Cyprus.

In the same evening, there will be an open air screening of the documentary “Seferis in the country of the eclipse”, by Cypriot director Andreas Pantzis. The documentary is a journey of what inspired the great Nobel laureate poet George Seferis in occupied Cyprus, an attempt to find a relationship between the photographs and poems. Tracing the path proves to be difficult, with constant obstacles. The places that were a source of inspiration are no longer the same. A journey through time and space.
