German Architecture
Goethe-Institut Cyprus and the Architecture Department, University of Nicosia invite all interested in architecture, city planning and design to attend the upcoming series of events about: German Architecture and its Reflection to International Scene.
On Tuesday, 5th November at 7 pm the exhibition “palimpsest Germany” of architecture photographs by German-Italian photographer Claudio Santambrogio will be opened at the Goethe-Institut in the presence and with an introduction by the artist. At 7.30 pm the German documentary film: “Berlin Babylon” (2001) will be presented, which gives an insight in the building activities in Berlin after the reunification in 1989/90. The film will be introduced by Prof. Dr. Hans Stimmann, who was Berlin’s head of the city planning authority from 1991-1997. (In English) This exhibition will be open until 22nd November Mondays – Fridays from 10 am – 5 pm. With support by the Embassy of Italy in Nicosia.
On Wednesday, 6th November at 7 pm the exhibition: ”International Relations – Young architects from Germany” by ifa-Institute for International Cultural Relations in Stuttgart /Germany will be opened at the Architectural Research Centre of the University of Nicosia in Engomi with an introduction by the curator of this exhibition Mrs. Dr. Romana Schneider. The exhibition will be open until 27th November Mon.-Fri. 9 am – 6 pm.
On Thursday, 7th November at 5.30 pm at the Architectural Research Centre of the University of Nicosia in Engomi Prof. Dr. Hans Stimmann will give a talk on: “Reconstructing Berlin after Reunification” (in English) followed by various presentations by Cypriot architects and a round table at 7.pm about: “Reconstruction of a divided capital” with architects, city planners and representatives of the Nicosia Masterplan project.(in English).
On Friday, 8th November at 7 pm at the Architectural Research Centre of the University of Nicosia in Engomi German architect Marc Frohn will give a lecture about the projects of his architecture office FAR titled: “So close yet so far”. (in English)
From Monday 11th till Thursday 14th November at 7 pm four films on architecture will be presented at the Goethe-Institut (with English subtitles)
On Monday 11th November: “Haus Tugendhat” (Germany; 2012/13; 116‘;dir.: Dieter Reifrath) about the story of a famous house build by Mies van der Rohe.
On Tuesday 12th November: “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” (Germany; 1919/20;dir.: Robert Wiene), a famous silent film with extraordinary expressionist film architecture.
On Wednesday 13th November: „Bauhaus – Modell and Myth“ (Germany; 2009; 103'; dir.: Niels Bolbrinker, Kerstin Stutterheim) about the world famous art school in Germany.
On Thursday 14th November: „The architects“ (GDR; 1989/90; 97‘; feature film; dir.: Peter Kahane) A film about the problems of young architects in the end-phase of the GDR. All films are in original language with english subtitles and admission is free!
