German-Cypriot Christmas Concert
For ten years the annual German-Cypriot Christmas Concert took part at the Catholic Church in Nicosia according to the tradition of church concerts. This year, the audience is invited to come to the PASYDY Auditorium in Nicosia on Saturday, 18 December 2010, 20.30 hrs (and to the Rialto Theatre on Sunday, 19 December 2010, 20.30 hrs), as 80 musicians need a stage.
In December 2010, the Choir of EPILOGI Cultural Movement Limassol under the baton of artistic director Angelina Nicolaidou-Spanou and the Deutsche Streicherphilharmonie (German Philharmonic String Orchestra) of Jeunesses Musicales Germany will join efforts within the framework of the second thematic youth music programme organized by EPILOGI Cultural Movement named “European Youth Music Dialogues: CYPRUS – GERMANY 2010”. The programme is realized in cooperation with Jeunesses Musicales Cyprus and Germany, the German Cultural Centre Goethe-Zentrum Nicosia, Rialto Theatre and Limassol Municipality. It takes place under the auspices of the Minister of the Interior of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Neoklis Sylikiotis.
Between 15 and 20 December 2010, the two youth ensembles – the 65- member Epilogi Youth Choir and the 15-member German Philharmonic String Orchestra are meeting for 5 days in Limassol, rehearsing, having recording sessions, workshops, educational and social activities, but also sharing their free time. The above two concerts will be the result of their joint efforts.
The young musicians will present the work “Mass”, written by one of the most prominent contemporary composers, Steve Dobrogosz, who will visit Cyprus especially for this occasion and also perform as a solo pianist. The concert will be enriched with choral arrangements of gospel songs by the composer and with the participation of well –known Cypriot musicians. Britten’s “Simple Symphony“will also be presented by the Deutsche Streicherphilharmonie.
The project significantly contributes to the intercultural dialogue and mobility of young musicians across Europe. It also develops the democratic participation of young people in building the Europe of the future.
The sponsors of the project are: Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Cyprus, Ministry of Youth of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Goethe-Zentrum Nicosia, Bernard Schulte Shipmanagement (Cyprus), Wolfgang Hastenrath Havariebureau (Cyprus) Ltd. and the Cyprus Tourism Organization.
