Girls in the Sun (Κορίτσια στον Ήλιο)
True to its pledge to turn Nicosia’s biggest courtyard into summer cinema, Faneromeni 17 Arts Festival welcomes August with a set of wonderful classic movies. On Wednesday, 2 August, don’t miss ‘Girls in the Sun’, the feature film directed by Vasilis Georgiadis.
A young Greek shepherd offers some almonds to a beautiful English tourist but she, misreading his gesture, runs away in fear. He runs after her and soon finds himself in prison accused of attempted rape. In vain will both the tourist and the shepherd try to convince the police that absolutely nothing had transpired between them. Before long, a strange love affair will grow between them as neither of them speaks the other’s language.
The wonderful music by Stavros Xarhakos, Iacovos Kambanellis’ script and outstanding performances brought the film to the 1968 Thessaloniki Greek Film Festival where it garnered four awards (Best film, Best music, Best Supporting Male Actor and Favourable Mention on Best Supporting Male Actor). It was also nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film.
