Greek dress in 19th and 20th century art
From the loom and the needle to the brush and the easel: Greek dress in 19th and 20th century art.
Evita Arapoglou, Curator of the Greek Collection of the A. G. Leventis Gallery, will speak on the history of Greek traditional dress through the works of 19th and 20th century Greek artists, for November’s Wednesday Lecture, on the 5th of November at 19:30. In these works, she will look at how scenes of nature and everyday life were enlivened by the use of varied and colourful materials; how official portraits were enriched with drawings and embroideries; and how elaborate details were used to enhance historic scenes. Through her lecture we will see the history of Greek art unfold through depictions of Greek traditional dress, through the people so clothed, and through the artists' reproductions of the Greek costume.
Thematically, the lecture complements the temporary exhibition that will be held at The Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia, “Patterns of Magnificence: Tradition and Reinvention in Greek women’s costume”. This exhibition will be on display from the 30th of October 2014 until the 19th of April 2015 and has been organized in collaboration with The Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation.
Seating is limited; reservations must be made by November 3.
