Hamlet
Fresh Target Theatre Ensemble presents William Shakespeare's emblematic play "Hamlet" from October 19th till November 5th at Sputnik, a play which, to date, has never been produced in Cyprus by a professional theatre company. This is made possible in part by the support of Hellenic Bank, who as the Gold Sponsor of Fresh Target Theatre's annual repertory for 2017-2018 supports the production of: Family Circle, Hamlet and Psychology of a Syrian Spouse
The production centers around Hamlet's personal journey - one of existential and at the same time political consciousness. Hamlet begins to "see" things from a different angle: while, in the beginning of the play his understanding of the world and life is through the eyes of a tremendously privileged heir, whose future and life has been pre-ordained and preplanned, this very understanding evolves through a welter of personal and familial developments, whereby his point of view is completely changed, as he begins to see the world through the eyes of a singular person and civilian. The hero, energized by this transformation, makes an effort to awaken those around him and this brings him, unavoidably, face to face with the establishment as well as its prevalent morality. However he is not discouraged, despite the fact that he recognizes that the result of his actions may very well bring about a new state of affairs; worse than the previous one - his effort and struggle prove more significant than any result.
In this production the personal activates the collective while personal experience affects and - in this case- determines civil experience. Hamlet seems to be battling against a new world as well as against his own self. This struggle between the old and new, the private and public, the false and real, leads the hero along a path of constant self-doubt and self-discovery. In order to protect himself, he must hide - that which has been revealed to him- behind a mask of insanity. Insanity becomes the fortress and shield with which he protects himself against a corrupt world, a world that seems prison-like and which, finally, reveals, unexpectedly, its own paradox and danger.
The production is appropriate for persons over the age on 17.
