The Hasampoulia (Τα Χασαμπουλιά)
The film is based on actual historical events; the turbulent story of the "Hassampoulia" family of bandits, three Turkish-cypriot brothers active in the turn of the 20th century and notorious for their action against the rich landlords and money-lenders of the era who were oppressing the poor population. The older brother, Hassan, escapes from prison and reunites with his two brothers, also wanted by the Law, having one and only goal in his mind. To find and kill those who betrayed him to the English and had him sent to prison.
Shooting began on the 10th of June 1974, only to be abruptly stopped four weeks later due to the coup d’ état initiated by the military junta, then ruling Greece, and the Turkish invasion that ensued. After great difficulty, filming was completed in Greece by October 1974. Six months later, the film officially premiered in Cyprus at the DIANA 4 venue. During its run it drew an unprecedented audience surpassing 180.000 people.
