Heraclis Ice Parlour: with you 79 years
"Heraklis" ice cream unfolds the story of Ledra’s "Makrydromos"
Following last year’s successful endeavour to support artisans and professionals bringing to life the historical centre of the old city of Nicosia for decades now, the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation aims to enhance the promotion of Cyprus’ Intangible Cultural Heritage by hosting an event dedicated to “Heraklis” traditional ice cream.
This year, “Heraklis” ice cream, housed in Nicosia’s “Makrydromos” (present-day Ledra street) celebrates its 79th anniversary. The Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation and the Historical Archive of the Bank of Cyprus, both in the vicinity of “Heraklis” ice cream parlour, organize an event on the enterprise’s history, starting from the period of British rule.
In 1939, Heraklis Demetriou, owner of a coffee-shop in Ledra street, launched a small family business manufacturing ice cream and soon gained the public’s trust with the authenticity and purity of his products. Today, “Heraklis” ice cream is the longest living business of its kind in Cyprus.
“Ledra 110” is a city trademark, where children and grownups meet to enjoy the wonderful ice cream flavours and relish the beauty of old Nicosia.
During the event, the public will hear about the history of ice cream in Europe and Cyprus.
