Heroic Music Pages
Beethoven’s incidental music for Goethe’s play Egmont is perhaps his most dramatic and greatest stage work. This is a story of heroism: Count Egmont leads the Flemish resistance against the Spanish rule during the 16th c., he is arrested and sentenced to death. The main ideals such as striving for national liberation, revolution against oppression and the sacrificial death of the hero are perfectly expressed, both though the music and text, and can be paralleled to the struggle of Cypriot people for their own independence.
