Horst Weierstall: From Sign to Action
The Loukia & Michael Zampelas Art Museum presents the temporary exhibition Horst Weierstall: From Sign to Action, reflecting the artistic development of German visual artist Horst Weierstall during the years from 1979 to date. The exhibition rejects the retrospective approach of a linear display; it rather juxtaposes the development of his work throughout the years as well as series of works, media and methods used. The artist experimented and visually expressed his various concepts using his own body, collage of ephemeral and found objects, painting and on-site drawing.
Although Weierstall lived in Cyprus from 1981 to 2008, his work was remarkably influenced by his frequent shifts between England, Germany and Cyprus. The artist is considered to be one of the first to introduce the genre of Performance art to the Cypriot audience in the 1980s. Solo actions, as defined by the artist, being his performances, will be projected through selected footage during the exhibition.
In the visual essay conducting the exhibition, one comes across the artist’s extracted readings from various literary sources, which inspired him during his artistic practice. The extracts are documented precisely the way they artist noted them in his diaries. Further to that, the reader also finds a number of critical reviews on his work by some of his collaborators. The aim of this visual essay is to provide an open interpretation and function as a participatory tool in decoding the thematic and abstract concepts developed in his works.
The exhibition will be inaugurated on Wednesday, 2 November 2016, at 8pm.
On Saturday, 26 November, at 11am a round-table discussion will take place in the exhibition space between Horst Weierstall, Klitsa Antoniou, Haris Pellapaisiotis, Vicky Pericleous, Martin Meason and Hourig Torossian.
