Hunger
The Second Stage of ETHAL presents the play Hunger by Charalampos Giannou.
Two parents are deeply worried for their 20-year-old son; he never leaves his room, talks to no one and, above all, refuses to eat. They are willing to do anything possible to bring him to his senses. Their exaggerated love pushes them to the limit. The play describes how a common family crisis can turn into a total disaster.
Charalampos Giannou was born in Cyprus and is currently living in Athens, Greece.
He has participated in Playwriting Workshops at l’Obrador d’estiu de la Sala Beckett-Grec Festival de Barcelona with Simon Stephens (Barcelona, July 2011), and the Neue Stücke aus Europa – Forum of Young European Playwrights – with Mark Ravenhill (Wiesbaden, June 2010).
His plays have been presented at the New Scene and the Apothikes Theatre (Theatrical Organization of Cyprus), the Contemporary Theatre of Athens (National Theatre of Greece), the Teatre Lliure de Barcelona, the Beton7 Art Centre in Athens, and the Municipal Art Center of Nicosia, Cyprus.
His play Hunger has been awarded the National Prize for Best Play 2014; Falling Down the Stairs received a Distinction at the Contest for Young Playwrights organized by the National Theatre of Greece (2009); The Look of Love also received a Distinction at the Play Contest hosted by the Theatrical Organization of Cyprus (2009).
Giannou’s plays have been translated in English, Spanish and Catalan.
