Il Grande Concerto
Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra
Youth takes centre stage in this concert, bubbling with the enthusiasm inherent in Brahms’ Hungarian dance no. 4, but then lyricism and romance take over with Rachmaninov’s Third piano concerto, one of his most enduringly popular pieces, but also one with the reputation of being one of the most technically challenging piano concertos in the standard classical repertoire.
But speaking of popularity, who isn’t familiar with the “da-da-da-dah” motif with which Beethoven’s Fifth symphony begins? One of the most recognizable pieces of classical music, and one of the most frequently performed symphonies, with E.T.A Hoffman describing it shortly after its premiere as “one of the most important works of the time”.
