Illustrating the History of Cyprus
Exhibition: ‘Illustrating the History of Cyprus. The Collection of the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia in a dialogue with the artworks of Kyriaki Costa and Louiza Kaimaki.’
The Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia is considered as Nicosia’s Historical Museum prioritising the promotion pertaining to the history of Cyprus and the various aspects of its historical path. In this context the Museum displays artworks by Kyriaki Costa and Louiza Kaimaki inspired by the History of Cyprus. The artworks illustrated the book series ‘The History of Cyprus’ published by the newspaper ‘Phileleftheros’.
The illustrations created by the two artists are exhibited within the Museum’s permanent collections, following the chronological order related to the course of the History of Nicosia and the History of Cyprus in general. The visitor can re-experience the Museum’s collections and at the same time observe the contemporary artistic creation. By introducing the pieces onto the space of the permanent collection a dialogue is generated between the Museum’s artefacts and objects, illustrating and reflecting historical events, historical moments, historical figures and many more. This discreet visual art intervention enables the viewer to re-live and re-examine the Museum collections through contemporary artistic creation.
