The impact of the economic crisis on human rights
Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr Nils Muiznieks, will be giving an open lecture at the University of Cyprus entitled “The impact of the economic crisis on the enjoyment of human rights”. The open discussion will take place on Wednesday, 9 December 2015, at 18:00, at the Senate Hall of the “Anastasios G. Leventis” University House (1 Panepistimiou Avenue, University Campus) and will be of one hour duration.
The Commissioner’s visit to Cyprus is focusing on issues pertaining to the protection of the human rights of migrants, including asylum seekers, as well as on the impact of the economic crisis on the enjoyment of human rights, in particular by women, older persons, young generation and children. This will be the topic of concern on 9 December 2015, as the intervention of the Commissioner has as a purpose to engage the general public in a dialogue on the current, most pertinent human rights concerns.
Due to the economic crisis the whole spectrum of human rights has been affected and many vulnerable groups of people have been hit disproportionately. Deepening poverty, including child deprivation, and youth unemployment are likely to have long-term effects. The debate with the Commissioner at the University of Cyprus aims at discussing the above issues proposing actionable recommendations for governments in order to align their economic recovery policies with their commitments for human rights. Mr Nils Muiznieks has done extensive work addressing the impact of the economic crisis on human rights protection. He has in particular published a report in 2013 in which he proposed concrete measures to member states to mitigate the negative effects of austerity, in particular on vulnerable groups of people.
Lecturer in Public Law, Mr Costas Paraskevas will be coordinating the discussion.
Supporter of the event is the Cyprus Youth Board.
